Overview

The Mustang Trekking with Sacred Trails offers a deep dive into the mystical landscapes and Tibetan-influenced culture of Nepal’s last forbidden kingdom. Nestled in the trans-Himalayan region, Upper Mustang is a land of eroded cliffs, sky caves, ancient monasteries, and walled cities. This semi-arid desert landscape, protected from monsoon rains, allows for trekking even in summer. The journey to Lo Manthang (3,800m), the region’s capital, is as spiritual as it is scenic.

Outline Itinerary

Take a scenic morning flight to Jomsom and begin your trek along the Kali Gandaki River to the medieval village of Kagbeni—the gateway to Upper Mustang.
Enter Upper Mustang and trek through barren landscapes and ridges to reach Chele. Marvel at canyon views and distant cliffs dotted with sky caves.
Ascend through rocky terrain and cross Taklam La Pass (3,624m). Trek past Samar and chortens to reach Syangbochen, surrounded by whitewashed houses.
Cross Yamda La and Nyi La passes with spectacular views of Mustang's dry valleys. Reach Ghami, one of the largest villages in the region.
Walk past the longest mani wall in Mustang and through Charang village before entering the walled kingdom of Lo Manthang, home to ancient palaces and monasteries.
Visit monasteries and ancient sky caves in Chhoser. Explore Lo Manthang’s narrow alleys, royal palace, and museums. This cultural day offers insight into Mustang's heritage.
Take a different return route via Lo Gekar Gompa—believed to be one of Nepal’s oldest active monasteries—before descending to Drakmar through red cliff landscapes.
Retrace your steps along dry highlands and cross passes to reach the village of Ghiling. Strong winds often sweep through this area in the afternoon.
Continue your descent through familiar villages and rocky hills to Chhuksang. Enjoy your last night in the Upper Mustang region.
End your trek by walking along the Kali Gandaki riverbed back to Jomsom. Celebrate the end of your Mustang journey in this breezy town.
