Overview
The Upper Dolpo and Mustang Trek with Sacred Trails is an epic 23-day journey through two of the most remote, culturally rich, and scenic regions of Nepal. You’ll visit Shey Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa in Upper Dolpo, cross multiple 5,000 m+ passes (including Nagdalo La), then traverse the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang and the arid, sky-cave–filled terrain of Upper Mustang. A true wilderness adventure with spiritual and historic depth.
Outline Itinerary
Fly Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Juphal, then trek through Shey Phoksundo National Park to Dunai.
Trek along the Phoksundo River, cross suspension bridges, and walk through forested terrain to Chhepka.
Continue to the stunning turquoise Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest and highest, which is also a sacred pilgrim site.
Cross the Nagdalo/Kangla Pass, then descend to Shey Gompa, a sacred Buddhist monastery perched above the national park.
Trek into a high valley, arriving at Namgaun Gompa, with views revealing the Mustang plateau in the distance.
Traverse multiple high passes and plateaus, entering Mustang’s arid landscapes filled with sky caves and wind-sculpted canyons.
Explore the medieval walled city, visiting its palace, temples, gompas, and ancestral homes in this culturally rich Himalayan kingdom.
Trek to Chhoser to explore hanging monasteries at Jhong and the iconic cliff-side Nylang sky caves, then return to Lo Manthang.
Descend along the Kali Gandaki Gorge, passing through Ghami and Marpha, with stunning views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri.
Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara, then return to Kathmandu by road, concluding your epic adventure with a farewell dinner.
